The namesake of our rescue & sanctuary. Jewel came to us in 2023 severely malnourished and yet still maintained her sweet disposition. She was an Off the Track Thouroughbred who was approximately 21-25 years old. Jewel passed away on 10/3/2024. We were able to give her the happy ending that she deserved. Her memory lives on in each horse that we rescue.

I am an approximately 14-year-old appendix horse, but I could be older. I am a gentle gelding and love my mares. I am actually Nutmeg's husband, so I was added to the Sanctuary list in January 2024. I am getting treatment for my arthritis and ringbone here at Jewels of the Desert. I am very laid back and great with children. If you want to make me really happy, I love neck scratches!
My name is Nutmeg. I am 19-year-old Belgian Draft Horse and am enjoying my retirement. I am very gentle and love apples. I used to be an Amish work horse and was abandoned in a kill pen in Missouri. Fortunately, I was rescued and spent the past 5 years as a lesson horse here in Tucson. In October 2024, Jewels of the Desert brought me home so I can be spoiled, pampered, and fawned over in their sanctuary. I love being groomed and baths in the summertime
My name was Odie (short for Odysseus because I had quite the long journey in life). Jewels of the Desert brought me from Tolleson, AZ on January 4, 2025 and I passed away on January15, 2025. Throughout my time at Jewels of the Desert, I recieved lots of love and treats to make up for the mistreatment and neglect that my owners inflicted on me. I was loved and I mattered in my last days on Earth.

Blackie
Mid 20's gelding , super gentle but a bit stiff on his hind end and is a bit sway back . Blackie will enjoy his life here in sanctuary !! He is very sweet and loves to just hang around you and the other horses .
Becky
Becky’s story is one of resilience and trust—though she’s had a rough start, we’re committed to helping her find peace and comfort.. After being sold to a family who mishandled her during transport (she was tied incorrectly in the trailer and ended up falling, injuring her neck), her journey took a sad turn. The injury affected her equilibrium, causing her head to tilt and making her a bit off balance, both physically and emotionally.
For most of her 15 years of life, Becky was used solely as a broodmare, which means she never had the chance to learn about the world beyond the confines of a breeding program. The lack of proper care, both physically and emotionally, has left her hesitant and skittish around people— She enjoys being with Joe and Nutmeg.
